Implementing Effective Quality Control Measures to Ensure Accurate Diagnosis

A one-day workshop on “Implementing Effective Quality Control Measures to Ensure Accurate Diagnosis” organized by the Bench to Clinic Research Center was held on 13th Dec, 2023 at Annapurna Hall, Hotel Vivanta in Kathmandu. Altogether 70 laboratory professionals from various academic and private institutions participated in this workshop.

Quality control (QC) is an integral part of the laboratory and it has always place for improvement. And to learn about QC practice and troubleshooting the laboratory hurdles, we had Dr. Tze Ping Loh from National University Singapore as a guest speaker who generously accepted our invitation to share some of the QC topics and to guide us in this aspect.

In Nepal we have a small family of laboratorians who have different skill and knowledge. The QC practice and laboratory quality management system is at very infancy level. To provide us the better picture of the milestones in laboratory history in Nepal, Dr. Keyoor Gautam shared us about his journey to the accreditation during the workshop.

Medical laboratory quality management though not newer concept to developing nation like Nepal, presence of serious gap in its implementation and continued monitoring is a challenge. There are multiple limiting factors in effective implementation of laboratory Quality Management System. The very first issue is the health budget allocation and inappropriate distribution of allocated funds. Funds for maintaining medical laboratory services are disproportionate and highly inadequate. Other major challenges are existing level of training and awareness among the workforce deployed, lack of national and local lab QC policies etc. We hope this workshop and the survey definitely lay the foundation for effective quality control management system in Nepal.
